A statewide taskforce of private, nonprofit, and public sector stakeholders, led by Governor Hobbs & The Office of Resiliency, proposed a plan to deal with surging electricity demand from things like data centers and semiconductor plants while trying to keep power reliable and utility bills in check. The recommendations focus on expanding clean energy, modernizing the grid, and improving efficiency, though some steps will require cooperation from regulators and lawmakers.
The plan backs an “all of the above” mix of resources, including more solar, wind, battery storage, geothermal, and new nuclear technologies, plus conversions of existing coal plants. It also calls for revisiting incentives for big power users, educating and engaging communities more directly, and exploring programs that tap customer-owned solar and batteries to meet peak demand.
