Clean energy continued to gain ground in 2025, with solar, wind, batteries and other low-carbon sources outpacing new fossil fuel development in many key areas. New power capacity in the US was overwhelmingly carbon free, clean energy met or exceeded new electricity demand and global investment in renewables surpassed spending on fossil fuels. Solar in particular led major gains, helping regions like the US and EU hit historic milestones in clean power generation.

The shift also extended beyond electricity. Steelmaking began moving away from coal, battery storage expanded rapidly and electric vehicle adoption continued to grow worldwide despite political and economic headwinds. While fossil fuels still play a large role, the data shows momentum favoring cleaner systems, with renewables increasingly shaping how energy is produced, stored, and used across the globe.
