Salt River Project is nearing the completion of its new large-scale battery storage facility

Officials from Arizona public power utility Salt River Project, Plus Power LLC and the City of Avondale gathered for a ceremonial groundbreaking to kick off construction mobilization at the Sierra Estrella large-scale battery facility.

  • The facility will store up to 250 megawatts, and is expected to be online by 2024.
  • Storage from project will support SRP customers and facilitate integration of renewable resources into their system.
  • SRP announced two battery storage projects with Plus Power, with both scheduled for summer of 2024; combined batteries surpass 1,100 MW in Western U.S., among largest utility investments.
  • Tesla providing lithium-ion technology; Plus Power building/operating to national safety codes/standards with Avondale Fire Dept for emergency response plan.
  • SRP committed to reducing carbon intensity ( from 2005 levels) by more than 65% by 2035 & 90% by 2050; retiring 2,600 MW of coal-fired generation & delivering nearly half of retail energy from carbon-free sources by 2025.
